STEP 2Identify the Core Human Need

Strip away product features to find the FUNDAMENTAL human need your innovation must serve. The AI will push you through at least three levels of “why.” Level 1: what does the product do (functional)? Level 2: how does it make people feel (emotional)? Level 3: what basic human drive does it fulfill — security, connection, status, growth, autonomy, pleasure, meaning? Keep going until you reach a need that cannot be reduced further.

STEP 3Map Industry Conventions

List every standard practice in your target market. Cover delivery conventions (how the product is typically delivered, what channels and formats), pricing conventions (how competitors charge, what is included versus extra), feature conventions (table stakes and premium differentiators), experience conventions (customer journey, touchpoints, accepted friction), and business model conventions (how companies make money, cost structures, partnerships). Be thorough — list even conventions that seem obviously necessary. The AI will contribute conventions you may have missed.

STEP 4Identify Fundamental Truths

Determine what is ACTUALLY true versus what is merely conventional. Focus on human behavior truths (universal patterns across cultures and time), physical and technical truths (real constraints and new capabilities), economic truths (what creates actual value, real cost drivers), and temporal truths (what existed when conventions formed and what has changed). For each truth, ask whether it could also be challenged.

STEP 5Challenge Every Convention

Test each industry convention against the fundamentals. For each, apply four tests: Is it REQUIRED to serve the core need, or just how things are done? Why does it exist and do those conditions still apply? What other ways could serve the same need? Does it serve the need well or just adequately? Categorize each as ESSENTIAL (required by fundamentals), LEGACY (outdated conditions), IMITATION (competitors do it), ASSUMPTION (never questioned), or SUBOPTIMAL (serves need poorly).

STEP 6Generate First Principles Innovations

Using ONLY fundamental truths and essential elements, generate radically different approaches. Forget existing products — start from the core need and fundamental truths. Create at least three concepts that are structurally different from each other (not variations on one theme). For each concept, describe the core idea, explain what fundamental truths it builds on, list what conventions it eliminates, and identify what makes it different from existing solutions.

STEP 7Evaluate Innovation Potential

Assess each innovation concept on five dimensions: need alignment (how directly does it serve the core need, 1–5), differentiation (how different is it from existing options, 1–5), feasibility (can it be built and delivered, 1–5), defensibility (can competitors easily copy it, 1–5), and market size (how many people have this core need, 1–5). Calculate total scores and rank the innovations.

STEP 8Design Minimum Viable Innovation

For your top concept, design the simplest version that tests the core hypothesis: “Customers will prefer this innovation over the current approach because of a reason tied to fundamental truth.” Define the minimum viable version that delivers the core value proposition. Identify the key assumptions to test and which are riskiest. Set success metrics — what specific numbers would validate or invalidate the innovation.

STEP 9Create Innovation Roadmap

Plan how to bring the innovation to market in three phases. Phase 1 Validate (weeks 1–4): build the minimum viable version, test with a small customer group, gather feedback on core value, reach a proceed-or-pivot decision point. Phase 2 Develop (months 2–3): build the full initial version, refine based on learnings, establish operations, begin limited launch. Phase 3 Scale (months 4+): expand market reach, optimize unit economics, build competitive moats, iterate based on data.

You have found it when you cannot answer “why do they want THAT?” anymore. Core needs connect to fundamental human drives: survival, reproduction, status, belonging, growth, pleasure, meaning. If you can still ask “why” and get a coherent answer, go deeper.

Q.What if my innovation is too radical to execute?

This is common and valuable. First identify if it is truly impossible or just unconventional. If truly impossible today, ask what would need to change to make it possible. Often a “radical” innovation can be phased — start with a less radical version that moves in that direction.

Q.How is this different from regular brainstorming?

Q.How do I validate that a need is truly universal?
